Parents & Guardians, Welcome!!!
It is my pleasure and honor to welcome you and your sons/daughters to Ms. Baumstein's United States History class! We're all in for a fantastic year together as we embark on a beautiful, historical journey.
I would love to first introduce myself. My name is Hailey Baumstein, and I graduated with my Bachelor's Degree in History & Secondary Education from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign- Oskee Wow Wow! I'm also endorsed in political science and English. I've been a history nerd practically since I could talk, so I'm absolutely overjoyed that I get to share this love with my students daily, so, I really hope that my enthusiasm will rub off on at least a few of them! I grew up here in the Chicago suburbs, bouncing around slightly. I love that I'm able to teach in a place that means so much to me.
As your sons and daughters will learn this year, I am a very goal-oriented person, for nothing keeps motivations high like a good goal! So, it is important for both me and them to set some good classroom goals. Now, I understand that these will vary from student to student, but there are a few that I like to set for all students in my classroom. Before I lay them out, I'd like to remind you that it takes not only effort from the student to achieve these goals, but it also requires effort from me to make sure I am resourceful enough to allow them to achieve them. Firstly, it is my goal for my students to be enthusiastic in the classroom. School is no fun for neither the teacher or the students if energy is low, so, it is my goal to help achieve this. Another goal of mine is for my students to become active readers, writers, and speakers, being able to reword, analyze, and synthesize what they learn using primary and secondary sources as well as each other to achieve this. Finally, another goal I have for my students is to understand the principals this nation was founded on. Through this, I hope to achieve greater civic empowerment, make students more politically aware, and increase voter turnout in four years when the time is theirs!
As I said, none of these goals can be achieved without my efforts and resources. I am committed to providing as many resources and as much information as possible to your sons and daughters. Through this, I am open to further research and appointments to ensure that nobody is feeling left behind and that everyone is working to their highest potential. I am also committed to fostering a very healthy classroom environment so that new thoughts, opinions, and ideas are not only welcome, but encouraged.
You are all the most important people in their lives, so they also need your encouragement to succeed in the classroom! With that being said, I am always available to all parents and guardians in the classroom. I am always reachable by phone or email, and I am certainly open to planning appointments if needed. Any questions, comments, and concerns will most definitely be addressed and dealt with accordingly!
I'm looking forward to a stellar year!
Thank you,
Hailey Baumstein

Hello everyone, students and scholars alike!
Welcome to United States History! I hope you're ready to embark on both a fun and challenging journey throughout the history of the nation we call home.
I'm your guide through the long tour of American History, and I couldn't be more excited for us to begin. As your schedule says, I'm Ms. Baumstein. Let me begin by telling you a little about myself. I was born n 1995 (yes- a whole different millennium!) in the Chicago suburbs, and I've lived here my whole life. In 2017, I graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a Bachelor's Degree in History & Secondary Education. Go Illini! I'm also endorsed in political science and English. I've loved history my whole life, so, I'm very excited to share my passions with you all.
You all will learn that I am a very goal-oriented person. Goals allow us to set expectations for ourselves and provide motivation to achieve those expectations. They are both challenging and rewarding. So, I have a few goals for you all to achieve during your time in my classroom. First, I aim for the whole class to be enthusiastic in the classroom. Now, I understand, things get boring from time to time, but hopefully we'll be able to see past that and make learning at least a little fun. Also, I aim for you all to become fantastic readers, writers, and speakers. My goal is that you all become experts on the material so that you can analyze, relate, and become one with the text and information we all learn. Finally, I hope that you all understand the basis on which our country was founded. I hope that you all understand your civic duty, become politically aware, and encourage yourself and others to vote in the election once you turn 18!
These goals are by no means all on you. I am committed to making these happen, so it is my responsibility to make sure that you all have the means through which to achieve these goals. I will do external research and answer as many questions as I can to make sure that no questions are left unanswered. Also, what I consider to be very important is a healthy classroom environment. So, I will ensure that our classroom is open so that everyone can healthily share ideas, options, and thoughts in a way that allows them to feel comfortable.
If there are ever any questions, comments, or concerns, do not hesitate to approach me. I am always available by phone or email, and feel free to drop in before or after school. If you are unable to meet within that time parameter, I am absolutely okay with scheduling an appointment.
This is going to be a great year!
Ms. Baumstein

For both of my letters, I wanted there to be a very welcome feel. I didn't want either the parents or the students to feel overwhelmed, or like they were entering a very strict classroom. I began by giving a little bit of information about myself. In my head, I pictured myself teaching at a school near my hometown, so that is why I emphasized how happy I was to be teaching in such a wonderful place. Although, I will remind my students and parents wherever I teach how wonderful it is. I included a "splash of flavor" such as "Oskee Wow Wow" or "Go Illini" to add character and show that I actually am a human with interests.
Throughout my entire life, I have been a very goal-oriented person, so it's good to let students and parents know that so they know you mean business when you're discussing the goals you set for them. I understand that many kids don't care to be enthusiastic in the classroom, but I hope that at least some days they will be. That is why I included that goal. Furthermore, reading, writing, and speaking are all important skills that we as teachers need to teach, and anyway I think they're almost explicitly in all of the Common Core standards. Not only are they important, but students and parents need to know why. This is why I included the importance of students being able to analyze and synthesize learned information. It's one thing to take a test or to write a random speech, but it's important to emphasize that the students will be crafting them on their own. Finally, it is a social studies classroom. So, I want to highlight the importance of being civically empowered. I want my students to understand the weight their voice has in elections and that it's important to be politically aware in order to make educated decisions.
I want my students and parents to understand that these goals aren't just on them. In order for my students to achieve these goals, it's my duty to be resourceful enough in order for them to happen. It's my duty to provide information in a way that's engaging enough for it to be understood. I also have to encourage an open classroom. No student would want to share deep thoughts or perhaps controversial ideas if they're not comfortable. This is why I aim to foster a safe learning environment from day one.
Finally, I want it to be known that I am available for any type of concern. I want to make myself approachable to both parents and students, and this is why I urged them to contact me with any kind of question or concern. There is no use for me to avoid potential problems, and letting them I'm know I'm open from day one will certainly let them feel at ease if there are issues in the future.
In all, I wanted to seem welcoming with my letter. I want students and parents to see me as a human and not just as a scary teacher woman that lives in the classroom and hands out F's like candy on Halloween. Showing them that I'm interested in their success and lives is something I want to do on day one so that we get the most out of the class as possible!
